Eerily smart new robots can read human body languageEerily smart new robots can read human body languageDo you think youre subtle in how you communicate at work? In a few years, you wont be able to hide what youre really thinking from highly advanced robotic computer programs that are attuned to the messages our bodies give off.Sometimes, it all boils down to the signals your body is giving off- at times, without you knowing it- but luckily, technology has made leaps and bounds in this space.Researchers at Carnegie Mellon Universitys Robotics Institute have reportedly gotten a computer to decipher the body language of people in a group on live video, but thats not all including, for the first time, the pose of each individuals hands and fingers, according to the school. The robots are only going to get smarter. How do we know? Because the team also reportedly posted their computer code online in an effort to spur similar more advances and applications, and released the data.So to whom do we owe our thanks? Reportedly, to a dome-shaped computer named the Panoptic Studio that can build 3D models of humans.Tech Crunch had the lowdown on whats inside and what it can do- it has 480 VGA cameras and 31 HD cameras as well as 10 Kinect sensors and the ability to construct wireframe models of participants inside the dome to let computers in on whats going on in our heads.CMU reported that this work at the studio led to the ability to tell how people in a group are positioning themselves using one camera and a laptop.Heres the domes websiteso you can see it up close. The research team had reportedly been scheduled to show off what they found out at the Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition Conference- also known as CVPR 2017- in Honolulu, which runs from July 21-26.Check out how it worksWatchthis videoto see the technology in action.Yaser Sheikh, associate professor of robotics, commented on the research in a statement. We communicate almost as much with the movement of our bodies as we do with our voiceBut computers are more or less blind to it, Sheikh said. What this could mean for your lifeTech Crunch highlighted what this system could be used for, before later stating that isnt exactly ready for using at the Super Bowl or your local Dennys.Interestingly the system can also be used to help patients with autism and dyslexia by decoding their actions in real time. Finally a system like this can be used in sports by scanning multiple participants on a playing field and see where every player was at any one time. the article says.Technology is getting a handle on more than we every could have predicted- even the subtle ways we communicate.

Transitioning to a Career in HR Management

Transitioning to a Career in HR ManagementTransitioning to a Career in HR ManagementWhat do lawyers, ministers, and psychologists have in common? People in those professions have all made the transition to menschlich Resources management and the field is full of professionals who took wildly divergent paths to get there. Here are some common ways in which people transition into Human Resource management. Lateral Moves abflug in an administrative role with a company and gradually take on more Human Resource management work over time. This is often easy to do as many admins handle work responsibilities such as payroll, employee benefits, and the role gradually morphs into employee relations.Decide to work in Human Resource management and network with HR professionals in community organizations and the Society for Human Resource Management until an opportunity appears. Knowing HR professionals gives you a head start when a fellow professional seeks a new employee. You are a known qu antity, not an unknown application or resume. While working in another role in the company, express thedesire to move to Human Resource management and apply when an opening becomes available. You can also assume components of the HR role as they become available or the current HR staff membersare overloaded.Work in a component of Human Resource management, like training or recruitingTry the field of Human Resource management and take some classes or earn a PHR.Major in sociology or psychology as most social science studies will help you transition to a role in HR. Business, Accounting, and Human Resources are all exceptional routes. Intern. You dont need to be working on an HR degree to qualify. Interns are drawn from many fields including engineering as HR is a profession that is best learned on-the-job.Start in sales. Sales roles are the equivalent of recruiting if you can pick up the phone, call a prospective employee, and make an effective pitch, you can become a recruiterfor an HR team. Improve Your Chances Review your prior employment, education, and experiences. Tailor your resume and cover letters to highlight the components that qualify you for a career in Human Resource management. Dont expect your prospective employer to connect the dots. Draw the connections to earn yourself an interview where you can further elaborate on your skills and interests for the HR job opening.Network with people who post HR jobs and influence decisions about who is hired for a position in Human Resource management. In addition to social media networks such as LinkedIn and Twitter, and try the many Human Resources communities that exist at locations such as job boards, SHRM,WorldatWork, ERE.net, and Workforce magazine. Make your workplace aware that you are interested in an HR role and ask how you can prepare to apply for an opening. A good leader can tell you specifically what to do to become prepared for the role. He or she can also gradually pass components of HR w ork to you for assistance. (Do check with your manager first to make sure that the manager agrees to help you make the transition.)aConsider a position with a small business as theyre likely to hire candidates who can shoulder a variety of jobs. You might be able to sell your experience in IT,accounting or bookkeeping, for instance, and take on those tasks in addition to HR. Take an inventory of your soft skills that can easily be transferred to Human Resource management includinginterpersonal and communication skills, dealing with confidential information and conflict resolution skills. Build your resume to highlight behauptung skills so that you easily appear qualified in a 30-second resume review.Work with a temp agency to gain some experience in recruitment, then apply for an HR or corporate recruiter job that comes through the temp agency. Transitioning into a career in HR management is more easily accomplished than a transition into a field that requires serious technical comp etence or skills. Fields such as engineering, IT, legal professions, and health care professions all require specific technical skills that, except for the most basic, beginning positions, are not easily taught on the job. The skills required for a career in HR are more easily learned while working in the field. With decent guidance, a sponsor, a mentor, or good coaching, you can transition to a career in HR.

Three Compensation Challenges Confronting Small Businesses in 2018

Three Compensation Challenges Confronting Small Businesses in 2018Three Compensation Challenges Confronting Small Businesses in 2018Three Compensation Challenges Confronting Small Businesses in 2018 RossheimAs a small business owner, this scenario has likely become a familiar drill to you An applicant for cashier smirks when you offer him just $3 above the minimum wage. Or your staff accountantin effect the CFO of your small businessasks if you want to counter an offer shes received that would bump her salary by $9,000.Yes, in these times of demanding workers and frugal customers, compensation is often a sore subject, particularly for small companies.Unfortunately, the challenge of paying workers more to compete for talent is only half the problem. A recent reportfrom The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) found that 89 percent of those hiring or trying to hire find few or no qualified applicants for their open positions. The best approach to getting your business out of these compensation scrapes is to understand and leverage key trends in the labor market of 2018.We checked in with industry experts for their take on small business compensation trends, as well as with small business owners for their firsthand experience to help you make sense of this complex landscape for your small company.Small business owners are often paying what the labor market requiresSmall businesses know they must offer competitive pay to hire the best talent. Yet for many growing organizations, its a struggle to pay more while keeping their services and products competitive. What owners can offer in wages depends on their ability to raise pricesand we havent seen a big increase in prices, says Holly Wade, NFIB director of research.Despite this challenge, many small companies have increased compensation for salaried and hourly workers to remain competitive. Over the last year, an increasing share of owners has raised pay, says Wade. In fact, according to an NFIB survey, the net proportion of small employers that boosted pay during the previous three monthsminus those that decreased payrose to 31 percent in January and February 2018, a higher rate than any month in 2017.How are small businesses finding the means to pay their employees more? The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 do give some small businesses greater leeway with compensation. Tax relief certainly frees up capital to better compete for qualified applicants and increase wages to retain employees, says Wade. But not all small businesses benefit equally from the tax-law changes.Another approach that some companies are taking is to make an end-run around labor regulations and wage laws, boosting their use of workers who are not on their payroll. In order to curb customer delivery costs, for example, Columbia Wine Company of New York City is considering replacing W-2 labor with the EpiFruit delivery service, which is similar to Grubhub or Uber Eats, according to owner Rohan Duggal.Companies are concerned about paying enough to retain good workersSavvy small business owners know that their workersespecially Millennial workerslike to do online research and are wise to compensation trends across their industry.Employees have a lot more information about pay than they did a decade ago, says Tim Low, a senior vice president at PayScale. As a small business owner, it makes sense to keep an eye on what rival companies are paying, rather than automatically offer incumbent employees nothing more than a cost of living adjustment. The good news what entrepreneurs often lack in cash flow can partly be made up with pay flexibility.Private companies are more nimble, says Carolyn Thompson, an entrepreneur and managing principal at recruiter Merito Group. They can readjust pay bands and give people performance reviews more frequently or eliminate reviews entirely in favor of instant feedback and spot bonuses. Some 62 percent of small businesses use individual incentive bonuses, according to PayScale. Some smaller companies, especially professional services firms who hire white-collar employees, can offer profit-sharing and company stock. And more businesses are doing so, according to Thompson.Benefits such as profit-sharing plans, increased 401(k) matches and 100 percent vesting from day one on the job are all trends that are increasingly offered by small employers, adds Thompson.Higher minimum wages spur reconsideration of workforce strategyIn todays low-unemployment market, even low-wage workers are aware of the multitude of opportunities in todays economy. That means many small businesses are struggling with attrition and workforce churn.I very much worry about keeping people, says Duggal. People in retail are not mostly there to be passionate about it. With that mindset, they might look for other jobs. The Federal minimum wage, which has stood at $7.25 per hour since 2009, is quickly evolving. In 2018 alone, 18 states and 20 localities have increased their minimum w ages, as reported by the National Employment Law Project.behauptung hourly pay increases are actually part of a long-term plan to increase hourly pay. Seattle, New York City and California are among the places that are scheduled to increase their minimum to $15 by 2022 or sooner. For many small businesses that rely heavily on low-skill labor, rising hourly wages are a cause of financial strain. State and local minimum wage hikes push the wage scale up for all other workers, so that their experience and capabilities can be reflected in their pay, says Wade of the NFIB. We hear from our members that if they have to raise salaries, then they may have to delay filling a position. This is the situation that confronts Duggal of Columbia Wine. The $15 minimum wage thats coming at the end of this year requires me to outsource some jobs like bookkeeping and marketing, he says. Ill be eliminating positions where I can.Duggals shop employs about 15 people, in hourly positions like stock and deli very, and in salary and commission roles like sales and management. His cashiers and delivery people now make $13 or $14 an hour other employees earn more than the forthcoming minimum. While these compensation dynamicsarent likely to go away any time soon, your small business can find ways to compete for talent. Start by being honest, flexible and erkennbar with employees. Use bonuses rather than base-pay raisesto help retain workers. And be sure to share your companys unique employer branding story with candidates in your job ad. The benefits are twofold your job description will effectively reach local seekers, while you get access to free candidate management tools to track views and applications.

One of the biggest challenges in almost all industries today is achieving gender parity. Gender diversity provides huge benefits in the workplace. pWhile some industries have made significant advancements in gender diversity, some industries lag further behind... and the construction industry is well-known for being in the latter category. If someone says, construction workers, youll likely picture a group of men in yellow hard hats analyzing an architects plans or laying bricks on top of a scaffold. And men at work signs only help to reinforce this image.pThis stereotype is rooted in reality. When was the last time you actually spotted a woman on a construction site? Or hired a female plumber or carpenter? Your answer is most likely never. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statisticsreports that only 3.4% of the total of 8.3 million construction employees are women.pBut the const ruction industry has a lot more to offer than steel-toed boots and hard hats, and it needs women to help advance the industry in this era of rapid change. Here are 5 reasons why women joining the workforce or looking to make a pivot should consider a career in construction.h21. Fuel Innovation/h2pNot only is diversity the socially and morally right thing to do, but it is also actually an excellent business strategy. pResearch presented in the Harvard Business Reviewshows that diverse teams develop more innovative ideas. This is further supported by a study conducted by Gallupon the performance of gender-diverse teams versus single-gender teams, which found that the difference in backgrounds and perspectives led to better business performance and problem-solving. h22. Capitalize on Demand/h2pThe construction industry is currently experiencing a labor shortage. The industry itself is booming and projected to be one of the fastest-growing industries, with total spending projected to ex ceed $1.45 trillion in 2023/a. However, most construction companies are unable to meet the rising demand. pAccording to the Associated General Contractors of America/a, more than 80% of contractors are experiencing difficulties filling hourly craft positions that represent the bulk of the construction workforce.pAnd demand isnt limited to individual contributor roles. Given the industry boom, there are a number of open stable and high-paying roles (any project managers out there?) waiting for the right candidateh23. Leadership Opportunities/h2pAccording to the Bureau of Labor Statistics/a, women compose only 7.7% of the total 1 million managerial positions in construction.br/pBut given the highly collaborative nature of construction work, more women in leadership roles would help drive innovation and enhance productivity.Furthermore, as a woman in construction in a leadership position, youd have the unique opportunity to drive change for the industry and make it a more attractive op tion for other women.h24. High-Income Potential/h2pSalaries for many skilled positions in construction are on the rise, making a construction career a prime choice for women looking for a high-paying job,pThe 2018 Construction Craft Salary Surveyconducted by the National Center for Construction Education and Research revealed that salaries for many skilled craft areas are increasing. Project managers and project supervisors topped the list at $92,523 and $88,355, respectively. The next set of highest-paying jobs include those of combo welders ($71,067), instrumentation technicians ($70,080), pipe welders ($69,222), power line workers ($68,262) and industrial electricians ($67,269). Of the 32 categories of workers in the survey, 19 positions earned an average salary of $60,000 or higher.h25. Sense of accomplishment/h2p The construction industry can give employees a unique sense of achievement. Yes, the job is stressful and the work can be demanding, but nothing beats the feeling of b eing able to build something from the ground up. pHow many professionals in other industries can point at a school, a hospital, or a skyscraper and say I helped build that?pThe construction industry has a long way to go in combating gender bias and supporting women in the workforce, but given the current demand for workers, theres no better time to pick up a sledgehammer (figurative or literal) and smash the gender stereotypes plaguing the construction industry.

Visionary Leadership Has 3 Key Characteristics

Visionary Leadership Has 3 Key CharacteristicsVisionary Leadership Has 3 Key CharacteristicsWhen you think about visionary leadership, you may think of someone like George Washington, who led a war against the British to establish a new nation, or Mahatma Gandhi, who also revolted against the British, but in a very different way. Both men saw that a new vision of governing was possible and set out to achieve it- and they did. With this historical perspective and pressure, you may think that visionary leadership is rare and certainly leid something an average person can have. But, visionary leadership doesnt have to be world changing. You may already have visionary leadership and not know it. What is Visionary Leadership? A visionary leader is an individual who sees the potential for how the world should exist and then takes steps to get therbeie. You can achieve visionary without a leadership role- become an idea guy, for instance. And, you can successfully lead people to accompl ish a course of action, while not having a vision for the change youd like to create. These two abilities combined- the ability to see the potential for change combined with the ability to lead others creates a visionary leader. If you want to become a visionary leader (or work for one) here are the three main characteristics you want to actively strive to develop or find. Risk Taking Change is never risk-free. And its rare that the solutions come immediately. George Washington didnt trounce the British in the first battle. Defeating the British took years. It took sacrifice the sacrifice of many people who were committed to the vision of self-governance and freedom from English control. You dont need to put your life on the line- Steve Jobs and Jeff Bezos slept comfortably at night over the years- but you may need to put your livelihood on the line. Jobs was fired from his own company. Visionary leadership is all about change and change means risk-taking. Listening Contrary to popular opinion, a visionary leader doesnt just go forth ignoring all the naysayers and do what he or she thinks is best. Yes, you will find that there are a lot of naysayers that you need to ignore, but you also have to listen to what people are saying. This makes the difference between the big idea guy and the visionary leader. If youre not willing to listen and accept advice, look at how the market is changing, and take feedback seriously, you wont succeed. Its fine to say, No, Ive considered all of those possibilities and Im still moving forward with my idea. But, if you havent considered the other possibilities, youre setting yourself up for failure. A good leader hears the voices of your team members. And your team needs to feel heard by their leader. You arent a real leader unless people follow you voluntarily, and for that to happen, they need to feel heard. Takes Responsibility A visionary leader knows that his or her ideas are different and are a significant risk a nd the people that follow such a leader are also taking a chance in doing so. So, its critical that you take responsibility for your actions and your vision. This is not only when events go poorly- its also to make sure that they dont go poorly in the first place. The leader is responsible for ensuring that the finances are available to pay people and keep the project moving forward. You must ensure that you treat people fairly. Remember, having a vision is much like having a child. You would do anything and sacrifice everything for your child, but when you want anyone else to participate in raising that child, you have to pay them. A vision is the same you cannot expect your team to sacrifice like you are willing to do. Its not their vision its yours. A visionary leader can become a great force in changing the world or an industry, but this leadership and participation arent always necessary. Sometimes you need a leader who just keeps people enthused about staying on the same path. But, when you need change, you often need a person with a vision. Visionaries look at the status quo and see how they can make the situation different, instead of just making the current situation better. After all, George Washington didnt set out to make a better relationship with King George. He set out to sever that relationship. And that vision made all the difference for the United States. - Suzanne Lucas is a freelance writer who spent 10 years in corporate human resources, where she hired, fired, managed the numbers, and double-checked with the lawyers.

That isnt a whole lot of time tostick around.Paul McDonald, senior executive director for Robert Half, commented on the research in a statement.Counteroffers are typically a knee-jerk reaction to broader staffing issues. While they may seem like a quick fix for employers, the solution is often temporary. When employees accept a counteroffer, they will likely quit soon afterward, he said.
